What is Concurrency?

Concurrency is the ability of a system to handle multiple tasks by allowing them to progress independently, without requiring simultaneous execution. It focuses on managing tasks efficiently to improve responsiveness and resource utilization. For example, an iOS app can update its UI, fetch data from a server, and process user inputs concurrently, ensuring a smooth user experience even if tasks are interleaved on a single CPU.

Concurrency is about task decomposition and scheduling, enabling tasks to run in an interleaved manner or switch between each other rapidly. It’s particularly useful in applications where tasks have different priorities or need to wait for I/O operations, like network requests or file access.

What is Parallelism?

Parallelism is the simultaneous execution of multiple tasks across multiple processors or CPU cores. It requires hardware support, such as multi-core CPUs or GPUs, to physically run tasks at the same time. Unlike concurrency, which is about managing tasks, parallelism is about maximizing throughput by leveraging hardware capabilities. For example, a photo-editing app might process different parts of an image on separate cores to speed up rendering.

Parallelism is most effective when tasks are independent and computationally intensive, such as video encoding or machine learning model training. It’s a subset of concurrency, as parallel tasks are inherently concurrent, but not all concurrent tasks are parallel.

How Concurrency is Achieved?

Concurrency is achieved through operating system mechanisms that allow multiple tasks to share resources efficiently:

  • Time Slicing: The operating system divides CPU time into small slices (milliseconds) and allocates them to different tasks. Each task runs for a brief period before the CPU switches to another, creating the illusion of simultaneous execution. This is critical in single-core systems where true parallelism isn’t possible.

    • Example: An iOS app might use time slicing to alternate between rendering a UI animation and processing a file download, ensuring both tasks progress without blocking each other.
  • Context Switching: The operating system saves the state of a task (e.g., CPU registers, program counter) and switches to another task’s state, allowing tasks to pause and resume seamlessly. The scheduler determines which task runs next based on priority and system policies.

    • Example: When a user taps a button while a network request is in progress, the system saves the network task’s state, handles the button tap, and resumes the network task later.

These mechanisms are managed by the iOS kernel, which uses a priority-based scheduler to optimize task execution while balancing responsiveness and resource usage.

Problems with Concurrency

Concurrency introduces complexities that can lead to bugs and performance issues:

  • Race Conditions: Occur when multiple tasks access shared resources (e.g., a variable) simultaneously, leading to unpredictable results. For example, two threads incrementing a counter without synchronization might overwrite each other’s changes.
  • Deadlocks: When two or more tasks wait indefinitely for resources held by each other, causing the app to freeze. For instance, Thread A waits for Resource X held by Thread B, while Thread B waits for Resource Y held by Thread A.
  • Thread Safety: Ensuring shared resources are accessed safely requires mechanisms like locks or queues, which add complexity. Without proper synchronization, data corruption or crashes can occur.
  • Performance Overhead: Context switching and synchronization mechanisms (e.g., locks) consume CPU cycles, potentially slowing down the app if overused.
  • Debugging Complexity: Concurrent programs are non-deterministic, making bugs like race conditions hard to reproduce and fix.

How to Achieve Concurrency in iOS?

iOS offers several approaches to implement concurrency, each suited to different use cases, from low-level thread management to modern, high-level abstractions.

  • Manual Thread Creation:

    • iOS provides low-level APIs like NSThread or POSIX threads (pthread) for creating and managing threads directly. This approach gives fine-grained control but is error-prone and requires manual synchronization.
